In this series of articles we're looking at
ski exercise machines - how they work and the benefits you can gain
from using them. They'll make a great addition to your home fitness gym
and with a little practice you'll find them highly enjoyable to use.
If you take the time necessary to get used to ski machines you'll be well rewarded with a vigorous cardio workout for your entire body which few other exercise machines can equal. In the winter Olympics cross country skiers are known as being borderline superhuman in terms of their fitness.
Some ski exercise machines will actually allow you to adjust the incline much the same as treadmills will. Raising the incline on a skiing machine will create the feeling of uphill skiing and considerably increase the workout your abdominals will receive. As rigorous as cross country skiing is, adding an incline will make it even more pronounced yet with little impact upon your joints due to the smooth, non resistant action of ski machines in general.
Ski machines are not popular and in fact have declined in their popularity over the years. This is in no small part due to the extra difficulty it takes to master the motions necessary to use them in comparison with treadmills or cross trainers for example. If you are prepared to put in the little bit of practice it takes however, a ski machine will reward you with great workouts - they'll even fold up for easy storage and won't require any more space than a typical treadmill.
For convenience they normally also have wheels to facilitate easy transport should you need to move them.
